The Hydra Pen H5 combines three technologies in one device: microneedling, automatic serum infusion, and 4-level EMS (Electrical Muscle Stimulation) microcurrent. Unlike a standard pen that only creates micro-channels, the H5 simultaneously delivers your chosen serum directly through the cartridge as the needles work — maximizing absorption with every pass. The EMS function adds low-level electrical stimulation to help firm and tone the skin, something a conventional microneedling pen cannot do. The result is a more complete session without needing multiple tools.
EMS (Electrical Muscle Stimulation) delivers continuous multipolar microcurrents into the skin. The H5 offers 4 EMS intensity levels — start at Level 1 if you are new to microcurrent. A gentle tingling sensation is normal and indicates the feature is working. EMS can be used alongside microneedling cartridges or paired with a Nano cartridge for a surface-level session. For Nano + EMS sessions, once per week is recommended. Most users begin feeling a noticeable firming effect starting around Level 2.
The H5 is compatible with five dedicated H-series cartridges: H12-Pin, H24-Pin, H36-Pin, H-Round Nano, and H-Square Nano. As a general guide: the 12-Pin works well for targeting specific areas and concerns that benefit from more concentrated penetration; the 24-Pin and 36-Pin cover larger surface areas and are popular for the full face, neck, and scalp; the Round Nano and Square Nano are needle-free and ideal for gentle surface-level serum infusion — a great starting point for beginners or for use between deeper sessions. All cartridges are sterile and single-use. Do not use cartridges from other Dr.Pen models (A-series, M-series, etc.) as they are not compatible with the H5's connector system.
The H5 allows needle depth adjustment from 0mm up to 1mm depending on the cartridge and area being treated. A lower depth (0.25–0.5mm) is recommended for delicate areas such as around the eyes, nose, and lips. For the cheeks, forehead, and jawline, 0.5–0.75mm is commonly used. For the neck, décolleté, or scalp, start on the lower end and increase gradually as your skin adjusts. Nano cartridges are set to 0mm (no needle penetration) and are safe for all areas. Always begin at a lower depth if you are new to the device and work up gradually over several sessions.
The H5 works best with water-based serums that have a thinner consistency, such as hyaluronic acid serums, niacinamide serums, peptide serums, or vitamin C serums. The 3-level liquid flow adjustment lets you match the flow rate to the serum's thickness — use a lower flow setting for thinner serums and a higher setting for slightly thicker formulations. Avoid oil-based products, physical sunscreens, or heavy creams, as these can clog the internal serum channels. Do not use retinol or active acids such as AHAs or BHAs during a microneedling session — save these for your non-treatment days.
Usage frequency depends on which cartridge you are using. For microneedling cartridges (12-Pin, 24-Pin, or 36-Pin), once every 4–6 weeks is recommended to allow the skin adequate recovery time. For Nano cartridges (Round or Square), you can use the device up to once per week, and Nano sessions can also be scheduled between your deeper microneedling sessions to maintain hydration and product absorption. Avoid using microneedling cartridges more frequently than recommended, as the skin needs time to complete its natural repair cycle before the next session.
Most users describe the sensation as a light scratching or vibrating feeling, not pain. At shallow depths (0.25–0.5mm) with a Nano cartridge, there is typically no discomfort at all. Sensations increase slightly with deeper needle settings or higher EMS levels, but should remain manageable. If you have low pain tolerance, applying a topical numbing cream 20–30 minutes before your session is common practice. The EMS feature produces a mild tingling or warmth — this is normal. If you experience sharp pain or significant discomfort, reduce the needle depth or EMS level immediately.
Before your session, thoroughly cleanse your face to remove all makeup, SPF, and surface residue. Do not apply active ingredients like retinol or exfoliating acids on the day of use. Fill the serum reservoir with your chosen water-based serum, prime the cartridge to remove any air bubbles before starting on your skin. After your session, apply a calming, hydrating serum (hyaluronic acid or a centella-based product works well) followed by a gentle moisturizer. Keep skin out of direct sun for at least 24 hours and use a broad-spectrum SPF the following morning. Avoid retinoids, AHAs, BHAs, and alcohol-based products for at least 48 hours post-session.
The H5 is not suitable for everyone. Avoid use if you have active breakouts, open skin, cold sores, eczema, psoriasis, or rosacea in the area to be treated. It is not recommended for individuals who are pregnant or breastfeeding, have a pacemaker or implanted electrical device (due to the EMS function), have a history of keloid scarring, are undergoing chemotherapy or radiation, or have recently had Botox or filler injections within the past two weeks. If you have any chronic skin condition or underlying health concern, consult a licensed skincare professional before use.
Each cartridge is sterile and designed for single use — dispose of it after every session and never reuse or share cartridges between individuals. After each use, remove the cartridge and wipe the pen body with a soft, damp cloth. Do not submerge the device in water. Clean the serum reservoir attachment with warm water and allow it to air-dry completely before storing. Store the pen in the included stand or case in a cool, dry location away from direct sunlight. The built-in rechargeable battery provides approximately 3–4 hours of use per charge; avoid letting the battery deplete completely between sessions to maintain battery health.
