The Q1S is designed to support a wide range of cosmetic skin concerns, including uneven skin texture, enlarged pores, dull complexion, hyperpigmentation, and fine lines. Its 3-in-1 technology — microneedling, EMS microcurrent, and LED light therapy — also makes it suitable for scalp care to help promote a healthier-looking hairline. For best results, select the cartridge type that matches your specific concern: 9-pin for spot correction, 25-pin for overall texture and pore refinement, 14-pin for scalp routines, and Nano for sensitive or reactive skin.
The Q1S stands out as a multi-technology home device that combines microneedling with EMS microcurrent and dual-wavelength LED therapy — features not found in standard models like the A8S or M8S. Those models are precision-focused microneedling pens with higher speed performance and are well-suited for deeper skin revision. The Q1S, by contrast, is ideal for users who want an all-in-one device for daily maintenance, surface-level skin refinement, and scalp care, without needing professional-grade needle depth. If your priority is multi-modal skincare in one device, the Q1S is the better fit; for targeted advanced microneedling, consider the A8S or M8S.
The Q1S offers an adjustable needle depth range of 0 to 1.5mm. As a general guideline: 0.25mm is ideal for product absorption and daily care routines; 0.5mm suits general surface-level skin refinement; 0.75–1.0mm is appropriate for areas with more visible texture concerns; and 1.0–1.5mm targets deeper skin layers for more intensive sessions. Always start at a lower depth if you are new to microneedling or have sensitive skin. Avoid depths above 0.5mm around the eye area, and never exceed 1.5mm with this device. When in doubt, begin shallow and gradually increase as your skin builds tolerance.
The Q1S is compatible with its dedicated cartridge system, which includes four types: the 9-pin cartridge for precise spot correction on blemish-prone areas; the 25-pin cartridge for broad coverage on texture, pores, and general facial care; the 14-pin cartridge specifically designed for scalp and hair growth routines; and the Nano cartridge for sensitive skin and daily redness relief. The Q1S cartridges are also cross-compatible with the Bio Pen Q2. Always purchase cartridges from authorized Dr.Pen retailers to ensure safety and device compatibility.
Usage frequency depends on the needle depth and cartridge type you select. For Nano cartridge sessions (surface infusion, no penetration), you can use the device every 1–2 weeks or between deeper microneedling sessions. For needle depths of 0.25–0.5mm, once every 10–14 days is recommended, with the skin typically recovering within 12 hours. For depths between 0.75–1.5mm, allow at least 3–4 weeks between sessions to give your skin adequate recovery time. Over-treating can lead to irritation and compromised results, so always allow full recovery before repeating a session at deeper settings.
At lower depths (0.25–0.5mm), most users experience only mild tingling or a light scratching sensation, and numbing cream is generally not necessary. At depths of 0.75mm and above, or in more sensitive areas like the forehead and upper lip, a topical numbing cream applied 20–30 minutes before your session can significantly improve comfort. Always remove the numbing cream thoroughly and cleanse the skin before starting. The EMS microcurrent function may produce a gentle pulsing sensation, which is normal and not painful for most users. If you feel sharp or intense discomfort, reduce the needle depth or speed setting.
For best results, use serums that are formulated for use with microneedling: hyaluronic acid serums are ideal for hydration and glide; growth factor serums and peptide serums support the skin's natural repair response. Avoid applying active ingredients during a session, including Vitamin C, retinol, AHAs, BHAs, or niacinamide in high concentrations, as freshly opened micro-channels increase absorption and can cause irritation. After your session, stick to gentle, fragrance-free hydrators and a broad-spectrum SPF during the day. Avoid retinoids and exfoliating acids for at least 48–72 hours post-session.
The Q1S is not suitable for everyone. Avoid use if you have active inflammatory skin conditions such as eczema, rosacea flare-ups, or pustular acne in the treatment area. Do not use if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, have a history of keloid scarring, blood clotting disorders, or are currently undergoing radiation or chemotherapy. Those with pacemakers or electronic implants should avoid the EMS and LED functions. If you have had recent cosmetic injectables (e.g., dermal fillers) within the past two weeks, consult your provider before using the device. When in doubt, seek guidance from a licensed skincare professional before beginning any microneedling routine.
Cartridges are designed for single-use only and must be replaced before every session. Reusing cartridges — even on the same person — increases the risk of bacterial contamination and blunted needles, which can cause uneven results and skin irritation. After each session, carefully remove the used cartridge, cap it, and dispose of it safely. Sterilize the cartridge port of the device with 70% isopropyl alcohol before storing. Never share cartridges between individuals. For hygiene and performance, always use a fresh, sterile cartridge at the start of each treatment.
Yes, mild to moderate redness immediately after a session is completely normal and is a sign the skin's natural renewal process has been activated. At lower depths (0.25–0.5mm), redness typically subsides within 1–4 hours. At depths of 0.75mm or above, some redness and minor skin sensitivity may persist for 12–24 hours. Slight swelling or a warm sensation is also common and usually resolves within the same timeframe. Avoid sun exposure, makeup, and sweating for at least 24 hours post-session. If redness, swelling, or discomfort persists beyond 48 hours, discontinue use and consult a skincare professional.
