The A6S works by creating controlled micro-channels that trigger your skin's natural repair response. It's a solid fit for enlarged pores, uneven skin tone, fine lines, skin laxity, post-acne marks, stretch marks, sun-induced hyperpigmentation, and scalp care to support healthier hair follicles. Start conservative with depth and build from there based on how your skin responds.
The A6S is a meaningful step up from the A6. Key upgrades: 1) built-in USB-C rechargeable battery - no more swapping out batteries; 2) a redesigned 3-slot cartridge lock for a noticeably more secure, wobble-free fit; 3) exclusive compatibility with 11-pin and 16-pin cartridges that the A6 simply doesn't support. If your A6 is still running fine, there's no urgent reason to switch. But if you want a cleaner charging experience and access to more cartridge options, the A6S is worth it.
The A6S adjusts continuously from 0 to 2.5mm. Here's a practical breakdown: 0.25-0.5mm for everyday serum absorption and fine line care; 0.75-1.0mm for pore tightening and surface pigmentation; 1.25-1.5mm for post-acne marks and firming; 1.75-2.5mm for deeper scarring (professional guidance is strongly recommended at this range). If you're new to microneedling, always start at 0.25mm and let your skin adapt before going deeper.
The A6S uses a proprietary cartridge fitting - it's not cross-compatible with the A6, M7, or other Dr.Pen models. Available options: 11-Pin (precise, great for delicate areas like around the eyes), 16-Pin (A6S exclusive, ideal for targeted zone treatments), 12-Pin (a beginner-friendly all-rounder), 24-Pin (versatile for full-face sessions), 36-Pin (covers more ground per pass), 42-Pin (maximum coverage - larger surface area actually makes it more comfortable), and Nano-R / Nano-S (non-invasive serum delivery, safe for frequent use).
For standard microneedling at 0.5mm and above, once every 4-6 weeks gives your skin enough time to complete its full repair cycle. Nano cartridges are the exception - they're safe to use 1-2 times per week for serum infusion. Don't push deep-depth sessions more frequently thinking you'll speed up results. Over-stimulation causes chronic inflammation and will actually slow your progress down.
At 0.5mm and under, most people just feel a mild tingling - totally manageable without anything extra. Once you go above 1.0mm, applying a topical numbing cream (5% lidocaine) 20-30 minutes before your session makes a real difference. Just make sure to wipe it off completely before you start. One thing worth knowing: higher pin counts like 36-pin and 42-pin actually feel more comfortable because the pressure is distributed across a larger surface area.
Stick with: hyaluronic acid, peptides, ceramides, and EGF. Before your session: double-cleanse, then wipe the treatment area with 70% isopropyl alcohol. After: apply hyaluronic acid serum immediately, skip makeup for 24 hours, and stay out of direct sunlight for 48 hours - sunscreen is non-negotiable if you're going outside. Hard pass on: retinol, vitamin C, AHAs (glycolic acid, lactic acid), BHA (salicylic acid), and any active exfoliants. Your skin barrier is temporarily open after microneedling, and these ingredients will cause unnecessary irritation.
Skip the A6S if you have active acne, open wounds, an eczema flare-up, or rosacea in the treatment area; any active skin infection; if you're currently taking blood thinners or anti-inflammatory medications (wait at least 5 days after stopping); if you're pregnant or breastfeeding; if you have metal implants near the treatment area or are wearing metal jewelry; if you're under 22 (in line with FDA guidance); or if your immune system is significantly compromised.
Cartridges are single-use only - no exceptions. Reusing them dulls the needle tips, increases skin trauma, and seriously raises your infection risk. Before each session: put on gloves, inspect the needle tips for any damage, then soak the needle end in 70%+ isopropyl alcohol for 2-3 minutes (or spray directly). Let it air dry completely before attaching it to the pen. When you're done, seal the used cartridge in a trash bag before tossing it - never throw loose needle heads in the open trash.
Completely normal. Mild redness, slight swelling, and warmth are all signs your skin's healing response has kicked in - that's exactly what you want. Shallower sessions typically clear up within 12-24 hours; deeper sessions may keep you pink for 48-72 hours. Post-care routine: rinse with distilled water or saline, apply a soothing sheet mask or hyaluronic acid serum, skip the gym and sauna for 24 hours, and hold off on makeup for at least a day. If redness hasn't improved after 3 days, or you notice pus, significant swelling, or a fever, reach out to a healthcare provider.
