Dr. Pen M8 Max Review: M8 Max vs M8S vs M8

Dr. Pen Glow · Model review & buying guide

Information checked September 28, 2026 · Product-specification review

Is the Dr. Pen M8 Max worth choosing over the M8S or M8? Start with the controls you want and the replacement cartridges you will need—not the similarity of the model names.

Editorial disclosure: Dr. Pen Glow sells Dr. Pen products. This review evaluates the M8 Max product materials supplied by DrPenGlow, current comparison listings and purchasing considerations; it is not a hands-on test or a clinical comparison.

The quick verdict

Dr. Pen M8 Max review: who should consider it?

The Dr. Pen M8 Max is worth considering if you want 15/20/25-minute timer presets, a pause-and-resume sensing stand and the M9 cartridge family. M8S owners should budget for different replacement tips; M8 owners should do the same. Neither existing cartridge family transfers to M8 Max.

Our buying recommendation is conditional: compare the final M8 Max device price, included accessories and refill costs before paying to upgrade. A new interface alone does not establish better skin outcomes.

What is new about the Dr. Pen M8 Max?

The Dr. Pen M8 Max brings timing, device status and cartridge recognition together on the handpiece. The product materials supplied by DrPenGlow identify six speed levels, a 500mAh battery, USB-C charging, a metal body and a manually adjustable 0–2.5mm needle range.

Three timer presets

The supplied materials label the presets Adapt (15 minutes), Standard (20 minutes) and Deep (25 minutes). These names describe timed modes. They should not be read as automatic depth settings, prescribed treatment durations or evidence that a longer session gives a better result.

Smart sensing stand

The product sheet describes the device pausing when placed on its stand and resuming when lifted. This gives the user a designated place to rest the pen during an interruption and continue from where they stopped.

The sensing stand is not described as a charging dock. Charging uses the pen’s USB-C connection.

LED screen and separate controls

The screen shows speed, time, battery status and a cartridge indicator. Separate TIME and SPEED buttons make the two adjustments distinct. Our assessment is that this layout should make status easier to check; usability has not been independently tested.

Chip-equipped cartridge recognition

The supplied feature sheet describes original-cartridge recognition. It is a compatibility feature, not proof of cartridge sterility or a substitute for checking packaging. Use the correct M8 Max/M9 cartridge family.

Depth and speed remain separate choices. The 0–2.5mm range is a device specification, not a recommended treatment setting. The timer does not determine which settings are suitable for your skin.

Buying status: the DrPenGlow M8 Max preview showed “coming soon” at our September 28 check. The product materials now supply detailed specifications and a reference packing list; the final store price and selectable retail bundles still need to be checked on the live listing.

Dr. Pen M8 Max smart timing: 15, 20 and 25-minute modes explained

Dr. Pen M8 Max has three timer presets: 15-minute Adapt Mode, 20-minute Standard Mode and 25-minute Deep Mode. They provide a visible time reference on the device. Needle depth and speed are separate settings; the mode names do not define treatment intensity.

Timing is one of the clearest distinctions in this M8 Max review. The handpiece has a dedicated TIME button and a screen that displays minutes alongside the speed, battery and cartridge indicators. In practical terms, the design brings the time reference onto the pen instead of requiring the user to look elsewhere. That is a useful interface feature, although we have not tested how it affects handling in practice.

15 min

Adapt Mode

The shortest preset. The product materials position Adapt Mode as an introduction to the device. The label does not establish that 15 minutes is appropriate for every first-time user or for sensitive skin.

20 min

Standard Mode

The middle preset. The product materials describe it as the regular-routine option. “Standard” identifies a timer choice, not a universal treatment duration, frequency or set of needle settings.

25 min

Deep Mode

The longest preset. “Deep” is the product’s mode name; it should not be interpreted as automatic deeper needle penetration. The manual depth dial remains a separate control.

How timing works with the smart sensing stand

The supplied materials describe pausing the device when it is placed on the sensing stand and resuming when it is lifted, continuing from where it stopped. Together with the timer, this makes interruptions a more explicit part of the control design. The stand is a resting and sensing accessory; the materials show charging through the USB-C port on the pen.

Time, speed and needle depth: three different controls

  • Time: the selected 15-, 20- or 25-minute preset.
  • Speed: one of the device’s six speed levels, selected separately.
  • Needle depth: the manual 0–2.5mm adjustment range, independent of the timer label.

A timer does not assess skin response or choose safe settings for the user. There is no need to continue simply to reach the end of a preset. Appropriate use should follow the device instructions and guidance from a qualified health-care provider; a longer duration does not by itself establish better results.

Why this feature matters when comparing M8 Max, M8S and M8

If you specifically want an on-device time display and a sensing stand that supports pauses, these are concrete reasons to shortlist M8 Max. The referenced M8S and M8 store pages do not list equivalent timer presets. If you are satisfied with your existing controls, the timer alone may not justify replacing a working pen and changing cartridge families.

Dr. Pen M8 Max vs M8S vs M8

The most useful distinction is the cartridge system. Treat these as three separate buying decisions, even though all three names contain “M8.”

M8 Max specifications come from the product materials supplied by DrPenGlow. M8S and M8 information comes from the linked store pages and existing comparison guides. *The M8S main specifications list six speeds; an older FAQ on the same page conflicts with that figure. Confirm the supplied model before purchase. A larger battery capacity alone does not establish longer operating time. Prices checked September 28, 2026; variants, bundles and availability may change. Cartridge families: compatibility guide, with the M8 Max/M9 update explained below.

Dr. Pen M8 Max needle cartridges: the same family as M9

Dr. Pen M8 Max uses the same replacement-cartridge family as Dr. Pen M9. DrPenGlow confirms this shared compatibility; the supplied M8 Max product sheet lists the same four tip formats sold in the M9 family. M8 and M8S cartridges belong to different families.

Both the supplied M8 Max cartridge sheet and the M9 replacement-cartridge page list 18-pin, 36-pin, 42-pin and Nano-R options. The family uses a chip-equipped cartridge design. Match the exact compatible family before considering pin count.

18-pin cartridge

The 18-pin option has the lowest needle count in the supplied M8 Max range. The product material positions it for localized work. That positioning does not establish that it is more precise in use or more effective for a particular skin condition.

36-pin cartridge

The 36-pin format sits between the 18- and 42-pin options in needle count. Two 36-pin cartridges appear in the reference packing list, making this the documented starter format for that package.

42-pin cartridge

The 42-pin option has the highest needle count among the three needle cartridges shown. A higher count does not automatically mean deeper penetration, greater intensity, less discomfort or better outcomes.

Nano-R

Nano-R is the round nano-tip option listed alongside the needle cartridges. It is a different tip format, not another needle count. Do not assume it is interchangeable with a medical microneedling procedure or appropriate for every skin type.

Before ordering: the current DrPenGlow cartridge page still uses older “M9 only” wording. If your selected option or packaging does not mention M8 Max, ask DrPenGlow to confirm the exact cartridge before checkout.

For existing owners: shared compatibility can simplify replacement shopping for someone who already owns an M9. It does not mean a used cartridge can be moved between devices or people. Needle cartridges are single-use.

Is the M8 Max upgrade worth it?

What we like on paper

The timer, sensing stand and status display form the clearest case for choosing M8 Max. Sharing a cartridge family with M9 also gives buyers a concrete replacement path.

These are reasons to compare it closely, especially when buying a first device or replacing one that no longer meets your needs.

What holds back a firm verdict

The product sheet clarifies the hardware and reference package, but a confirmed local price is still needed to judge the premium fairly. We have not independently measured handling, battery life, noise, durability or treatment outcomes.

If your current pen works well, identify the specific inconvenience an upgrade would solve before replacing it.

M8 Max vs M8S: include the cost of changing tips

M8 Max adds documented timer presets, sensing-stand pause/resume and cartridge recognition to the comparison. The supplied 500mAh capacity is larger than the M8S listing’s 380mAh, although we have not tested runtime. For an M8S owner, the purchase decision also includes unused cartridge stock. Compare the new device plus compatible replacements against keeping a working pen. If you have a supply of M8S-family tips, that is a practical reason to stay with the existing platform.

M8 Max vs M8: separate new features from necessity

M8 remains worth considering if price and existing M8/M7S cartridges are your priorities. USB-C alone is not a reason to switch: the current M8 listing already includes it. For the two established models, see our M8 vs M8S comparison.

Compare total ownership cost: device price + the number of new compatible cartridges you need + any delivery charges. Compare equivalent quantities and pack sizes rather than the lowest displayed price alone.

Dr. Pen M8 Max review FAQs

Does M8 Max use M9 needle cartridges?

Yes. M8 Max and M9 share a cartridge family. Check the exact replacement listing and packaging before ordering, especially while older pages still show M9-only wording.

Can I use M8 or M8S cartridges with M8 Max?

No. M8 uses the M8/M7S family, M8S uses the M8S/A8S/A9/A11 family, and M8 Max uses the M9 family. Matching needle counts do not make different connectors compatible.

Is M8 Max better than M8S or M8?

It may be a better fit for buyers who value its controls and compatible replacements. This specification review does not establish superior clinical results or better value before the final store price is available.

How many speeds does M8 Max have?

The supplied M8 Max specification sheet lists six speed levels, a 500mAh battery and USB-C charging.

Does the M8 Max stand charge the pen?

The supplied materials describe a sensing stand for pause and resume. They show charging through the USB-C port on the pen, not through the stand.

Does Deep Mode automatically increase needle depth?

The supplied materials identify Deep Mode as the 25-minute timer preset. Needle depth is adjusted with the manual dial; do not interpret the mode name as an automatic depth change or treatment recommendation.

Where can I buy Dr. Pen M8 Max?

Check DrPenGlow’s M8 Max release page for updates. At this review’s information check, the store preview said coming soon; a verified M8 Max purchase page was not available.
